June's Anniversary
The big news for us is our 40th wedding anniversary. For those who don't know, the 40th is the "Retaining Wall Anniversary," and it's a huge one in our lives. But we don't want to bore you and you don't want to hear about expensive house projects. Anyway, on June 2, 1973 we stood in front of 40 or 50 friends and family in the chapel of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN and were pronounced husband and wife by Robin's father. After the ceremony, fun reared its ugly head as we had a big reception that went on for hours in the side yard of some friends' house on Ashwood Avenue. So far, the leap of faith and commitment made by those two young people on a hot June summer afternoon has worked out. What an interesting ride it has been - and continues to be. We celebrated yesterday by going to a movie in Charlottesville, VA with some friends. If "Mud" comes to your town, don't miss it. It's a fine flick. We'll definitely see it again sometime. We've had a good amount of time off the road. We generally live our lives with no more than two weeks at home in between gigs, so being at home for an extended period of time is a rare experience for us. To tell the truth, it's something we could get used to. Our yard is in good shape, we're getting greens and asparagus out of the garden and the decks have a fresh coat of paint on them. In other words, the "to do list," which was once as long as your arm, has been shortened considerably. Right now we're enjoying driving down the roads of Augusta County and smelling the new mown hay. It's a beautiful time of the year to be home. We've been listening to some good music and that's always good for the songwriting. There's so much good music around these days that it's sometimes overwhelming. Right now Kasey Chambers and Shane Nichols' newest, "Wreck And Ruin," is getting a lot of play in the house and car. Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell have a really nice new release, "Old Yellow Moon" that reminds us of why we started loving their music in the first place. When it comes to Old Time music it's hard to beat Bigfoot's "I've Got A Bulldog" CD. It's constantly being played. And there's a revival of Joni Mitchell's early catalogue going on around here right now. So we're working on our muse. Bumper Sticker of the Month: Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. The band vehicle is looking lonely in our back driveway but soon enough it will be on the road. It's time for us to get back in the swing of things and we're looking forward to a busy summer and fall. We hope this finds you well and we'll hope to see you at one of the stops along the way.
