Robin and Linda Williams: And They're Off

Hey Folks,
Things are looking good here in the Shenandoah Valley. We've had an amazingly beautiful spring and the redbud and the dogwood were spectacular. The iris and columbine are now bursting out everywhere we look and yesterday we've been eating lettuce and asparagus out of our garden. The only problem is the grass is growing as well. A farmer friend of ours calls Spring and Summer "the work seasons." He was grousing about this last weekend and our reply was, "well, at least it's just starting." He was not amused but he is still our friend.

We've just finished tying up all the loose ends left from our jaunt to Texas. That was a fun trip. We saw family and friends, played some familiar places and, as well, traveled some new roads to places we've never been before - like Corpus Christi. We enjoyed it there, had a good gig and ate three times at the same Mexican restaurant, Santa Rosa on South Staples Street. We stumbled on to it by accident and after our first meal didn't even consider eating anywhere else. It was also in Corpus that we saw the Clydesdale Barber Shop whose sign said, "Haircut and Free Beer, $14.00." We didn't take advantage of it but, we had to admit that it's a novel notion.

The Fortune Williams Music Festival is booked and we're looking to have an exciting festival. The dates are Frday and Saturday, September 24th and 25th and tickets will go on sale in July. As usual, Friday night's show will be the Songwriter Show. Our guest this year is Don Schlitz whose songwriting career started in the '70s when Kenny Rogers recorded his song "The Gambler." Since then he's had songs recorded by Randy Travis, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Johnny Cash, The Judds and countless others. We're excited to have him at our festival. Jimmy Fortune's guest is Rivers Rutherford who's had Gretchen Wilson, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes, Keith Urban, Trick Pony, Blake Shelton, The Highwaymen and a host of others record his songs. The Songwriter Show is always a special show and this year's event will be no exception.

Patty Loveless is the headline act for Saturday and we couldn't be more pleased to have a performer of her stature and musical talent at our festival. She's one the best singers we know of. Back in the late '80s we were traveling and doing some shows with Chet Atkins and his band and got to know Chet's guitar player, Paul Yandell. We were telling Paul how much we loved Patty Loveless and his comment was, "She's the best singer in Country Music. Everybody else is just someone with a record contract." We still laugh at that and Paul was right on. Also on the show that day will be Darrell Scott and the duo Jimmy Gaudreau and Moondi Klein. Of course we'll be there both days along with our co-host Jimmy Fortune.

Just booked is a night at The Mockingbird in Staunton, Va. It's part of a series sponsored by Huss and Dalton guitars the wonderful folks who've made the guitars we play. We'll share the stage with Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton, the owners of company. Both of them are superb musicians who rarely get on stage anymore. For years we have played and sung with them at music parties. This is our chance to bring the fun out of the living room and onto a friendly bandstand.

And they're off. Yes, we watched the Kentucky Derby yesterday. And we're off this week for some good work. We'll play in five states this month and drive through a few more before you hear from us next. We hope this finds you all well and happy. Thanks to those of you who stay in touch with us through this list. We're hoping that we have replied to all of you. If not, well we meant to and will try and do better next time.

Remember, music makes you smarter so go see some live music soon.

Your pals,
Robin and Linda
