Robin and Linda Williams: Recovery, Musicals, and Moonlight

Hey Friends,
It's your buddies, Robin and Linda, checking in and catching up after having gone dark for a month or so. Our summer season ended with a fun gig at the Oak Grove Folk Music Festival and, four days later, on the morning of August 31, we drove over the Blue Ridge mountains to the University of Virginia hospital in Charlottesville and Linda had "Drive-By Reverse Shoulder Replacement Surgery." Well, it wasn't exactly "drive by' but it was close. She checked in at 11:00 a.m. and, eleven hours later we were back home with Linda's left arm in a sling, the surgery having successfully been completed.

So now we're in recovery and it's going well. Linda is like a dog on a bone about her physical therapy, both at the clinic and at home. She likes her PT guy, and he pushes her hard. Her range of motion is improving and, along with that is the added plus of the shoulder not hurting anymore.

We have a little Martin "Backpacker" guitar and these days she's been playing it to keep her callouses from disappearing. She just slaps the capo on the fifth fret, which keeps her from extending her left arm too far, too soon, and off we go. We've finished a new song which we're having fun playing over and over and have started working on some other ones as well. It's a wonderful feeling to think that Linda will soon be back to having pain-free, full-use of her arm again. We feel fortunate to have good health care and are grateful for supportive friends who have eased our situation during her recovery.

From the "What's New Department" comes something old. In the mid-90s we teamed up with a wonderful playwright, Mary Sue Price, and put together a play called "Streets of Gold." It was headed for the main stage of a major Off-Broadway theater in New York with a Tony-award winning director on board when the theater suddenly folded. It was a real blow, especially for Mary Sue. But we all moved on, Mary Sue to becoming an Emmy-award winning television writer and we went back on the road. Thankfully, Mary Sue never lost faith in the play, and now, thanks to an Artist 360 grant, which is funded by the Walton Foundation, and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Alliance, the project is back up and running. We've been up to the attic to retrieve the script and the CD with the eleven songs we wrote for the play and are starting to familiarize ourselves with what we did over 25 years ago. It's perfect timing for us and we're excited about it. The plan is to have the play ready by the end of next summer.

Bumper Sticker of the Month: Hard work must have killed someone.

A few nights ago, before going to bed, we went out and looked at the full moon which was accompanied by Mars in the northeastern sky. It was a sight to see. They'll be together all week. Check it out. There's no cover charge.

Your pals,
Robin and Linda
